Dimensional reference: ASME B18.31.2 covers continuous-thread and double-end studs in inch dimensions and includes UNC, UNF and 8UN thread data. BSW is a separate British thread system and must be specifically ordered when required.

Solution Treatment and Quenching

Class 1 - Carbide Solution Treated

Grade B8M Class 1 is supplied in the carbide-solution-treated condition. Published B8M references describe solution treatment in the approximately 1900 - 2100 deg F (1040 - 1150 deg C) range, followed by rapid cooling to prevent chromium-carbide precipitation. The exact heat-treatment procedure and current ASTM edition requirements shall govern the supplied product.

Class 2 - Solution Treated + Strain Hardened

Class 2 material is carbide-solution treated and subsequently strain hardened to achieve the specified higher mechanical properties. The strengthening is produced by controlled cold work rather than conventional precipitation hardening.

Important: SS316/B8M is an austenitic stainless steel. It is not hardened by conventional quench-and-temper treatment like carbon or alloy steels. The solution treatment is intended to place chromium carbides into solution and preserve corrosion resistance; Class 2 strength is obtained through strain hardening.
