Hastelloy C22 Hex Bolts – Solution Annealing

Hastelloy C22 is solution treated at approximately 1120°C and rapidly cooled. Water quenching is commonly specified for solution treatment, while rapid air cooling may be suitable for certain thin sections. The exact heat-treatment practice should follow the applicable material specification, product size and project requirement.

Hastelloy C22 Corrosion Resistance

Hastelloy C22 hex bolts provide substantially higher corrosion resistance than conventional SS 316 / 316L fasteners in many aggressive chemical environments. C22 combines high chromium with significant molybdenum and tungsten. It therefore performs well against pitting, crevice corrosion and mixed oxidizing and reducing media.

Compared with Hastelloy C276, Hastelloy C22 provides excellent localized corrosion resistance and particularly strong performance in oxidizing environments. C276 remains an outstanding choice for many reducing and mixed chemical environments. The correct alloy should always be selected according to the actual chemical composition, temperature, concentration and operating conditions.

Hastelloy C22 vs SS 316L vs Hastelloy C276

For severe corrosion applications, Hastelloy C22 hex Nuts provide a significant performance advantage over SS 316L. Haynes data comparing critical pitting and crevice temperatures in acidified 6% ferric chloride shows substantially higher values for C22 and C276 than 316L. In that test environment, C22 showed a critical pitting temperature above 302°F and a critical crevice temperature of 176°F, compared with 59°F and 32°F for 316L. C276 also exceeded 302°F for pitting and reached 131°F for crevice corrosion. These results are test-specific and should not be treated as universal service-life predictions.
