ASTM B574 Nickel Alloy Rods, Bars & Threaded Fastener Materials

ASTM B574 covers low-carbon nickel-chromium-molybdenum and related nickel alloys supplied as rod and bar for general corrosive service. The specification includes solution-annealed material with defined chemical and mechanical requirements for several UNS grades, including Hastelloy C276 and C22.

ASTM B574 Scope & Product Forms

ASTM B574 covers rod and bar of low-carbon nickel-chromium-molybdenum, nickel-molybdenum-chromium, nickel-molybdenum-chromium-tantalum, nickel-chromium-molybdenum-copper and nickel-chromium-molybdenum-tungsten alloys. Depending on grade and size, products may be supplied solution annealed, pickled, mechanically descaled, ground, turned or cold worked.

Important: ASTM B574 is a material specification for rod and bar. When this material is machined into studs, bolts, screws, nuts or washers, the finished-fastener dimensions, thread standard, testing and certification requirements should also be specified.

Solution Annealing Temperature & Process — Grade by Grade

ASTM B574 defines solution-annealed product conditions and mechanical requirements; the exact annealing temperature is alloy-specific. The values below are technical processing references and should be confirmed against the applicable mill specification and MTC for critical production.

GradeUNSSolution AnnealProcess
Hastelloy C276N102761121°C / 2050°FHeat through the full section; typically 10-30 min after reaching temperature depending on thickness; water quench preferred. Rapid air cooling can be used for thin sections.
Hastelloy C22N060221121°C / 2050°FSolution anneal, then water quench; rapid air cooling may be suitable for thin sections.
Hastelloy G-35N060351121°C / 2050°FHeat to solution-annealing temperature followed by rapid air cooling or water quenching.
Hastelloy C-4N06455Approx. 1066°C / 1950°FSolution anneal followed by rapid cooling; water quench is preferred for restoring the solution-annealed condition.
Alloy 2120 MoNN060581150-1185°CSolution anneal with hold based on section size, followed by rapid quenching to prevent re-precipitation.
Alloy 59N060591100-1180°CSolution anneal followed by rapid water quench or forced rapid cooling according to section and mill practice.
Hastelloy C-2000N06200Approx. 1149°C / 2100°FHeat to solution-annealing temperature, hold according to thickness, then water quench; rapid air cooling may suit thin sections.
HYBRID-BC1N103621149°C / 2100°FSolution anneal followed by rapid air cooling or, preferably, water quenching.
Nickel Alloy 212N06210Approx. 1177°C / 2150°FSolution anneal followed by rapid liquid quenching according to the material route.
Alloy 686N06686Approx. 1180-1200°CSolution anneal followed by rapid cooling / water quench to restore the corrosion-resistant microstructure.
Process control: Measure the actual work-piece temperature. Start the holding-time record after the complete section reaches the target temperature. Avoid slow cooling through precipitation-sensitive ranges. Customer specifications and certified mill heat-treatment records take precedence.
